Most advanced MRI technology coming to Memorial Hospital

Memorial Hospital is installing a 3-Tesla MRI, the latest generation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is the fastest MRI available, producing top quality images. The specially designed wide bore, in combination with the 3 T magnetic field, makes the Memorial system the first of its kind in the entire state of Tennessee.

Stronger than traditional MRI, the 3-Tesla total imaging matrix technology has the ability to minimize motion blur from breathing, making it more tolerable for the patients. Faster MRI technology means more images in less time, another patient-friendly feature.

“Lumbar spine imaging can be complete in about half the time with this new equipment,” says Dr. Don Mills, chief of Radiology for Memorial Health Care System. “This can be an important factor for patients in pain who may dread being flat on their back during the procedure.”

Diagnostic accuracy is improved with exquisitely detailed images. For example, stroke evaluation is possible even in the smallest vessels in the brain and the source of unexplained knee pain can be revealed with these high resolution images.

“Orthopedic specialists will find this technology ideal for diagnosis of the smallest muscle or tendon tear in even the largest patients,” says Dr. Mills. “With a table capacity of 600 pounds and a wide bore system, the acquisition of this new technology will make a difference for a growing population struggling with weight issues and corresponding health concerns like worn out knees and spine pain.”

Combining unprecedented imaging power with ultimate sensitivity to patient comfort, Memorial’s new technology also provides capabilities for chest, abdomen, and pelvic imaging.
